Care Guide

  • Light: Vanda Miss Joaquim thrives in bright, indirect light. It needs plenty of light, so placing it near a south or east-facing window is ideal. However, avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

  • Temperature: This orchid prefers warm temperatures. Daytime temperatures between 75°F and 85°F (24°C to 29°C) and nighttime temperatures around 60°F to 70°F (15°C to 21°C) are ideal.

  • Humidity: High humidity is crucial. Aim for 50-70% humidity. You can increase humidity by placing the pot on a tray of wet pebbles or using a humidifier.

  • Watering: Vandas like to be kept moist but not waterlogged. Water them thoroughly when the surface of the medium starts to dry out. In general, watering 2-3 times a week is suitable, but this may vary depending on your environment.

  • Fertilizing: Feed your Vanda Miss Joaquim with a balanced orchid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks.

  • Potting and Medium: Vandas are often grown in baskets or containers with a well-draining medium. A mix of bark, charcoal, and perlite works well. Some growers also mount them on pieces of wood or cork.

  • Air Circulation: Good air circulation is essential for preventing fungal and bacterial issues. Ensure the area around your Vanda has adequate airflow.

  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its container. This is also a good time to inspect the roots and remove any that are dead or rotting.

  • Pest and Disease Management: Keep an eye out for common orchid pests like aphids, mealybugs, and scale. If you notice any issues, treat them promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
